ROSA Linux Bugzilla – Bug 8239
driver don't want to change from uxa to i915 driver
Last modified: 2017-08-16 04:38:17 MSD
Description of problem: while using intel integrated graphics driver, it has a very poor fps on sdlmame games. in Rosa 8 it wasn't the case. My computer was
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
How reproducible: try to change drivers - one will fail - free (modsetting), one will revert to i915 with a poor framerate when you try to change to UXA driver, vesa driver is not good enough to play.
Steps to Reproduce:
1.try to change drivers, it will happen.
2.Try to use SDLMame, the framerate is poor, frameskip is 6/10, it's very hard to play, and no driver available can change this state. A Neogeo emulator should work flawlessly, it worked perfectly in a computer Athlon XP buyed in 2000, impossible in this computer it couldn't play, and it wasn't the case in Rosa 8. In Rosa 8 with lxde desktop, the framerate was 60fps.
Thank you very much for your time and concern.
Yes, "modesetting" driver is known not to work properly on the older hardware. The graphics configuration tool should not have shown that option there in the first place.
And VESA is mostly for debugging and recovery now, it is not suitable for real work most of the time.
Does the Intel's driver work OK on that system without UXA, that is, with their default acceleration system (SNA)? To check this, you can just remove x11-driver-video-intel-config-uxa package and reboot the system or restart the X11 server.
Using the default acceleration for Intel graphics is preferable. "UXA" is often slower and it is only recommended to try it if the defaults are not doing well.
If the FPS are still significantly lower in ROSA R9, even with the default settings for the driver, you could try ROSA R8 and R9 in Live mode on that system and check the FPS in glxgears, for example. ('vblank_mode=0 glxgears'). If you do that, please also upload the data using hw-probe in both cases, for comparision.
[formal stuff] Resetting importance of the bug to normal, these fields are not quite what they may seem, unfortunately.[/formal stuff]
ok, I tried without the package, nothing change.
Okay, I am going to try to bench.

Ok, I tried first on Rosa 9 lxqt. I have to say, capabilities on desktop are better. The problem is, as far as I see, under OpenGL applications.
Sorta way, it could be cool if we could use this driver for desktop, and Rosa R6 driver for graphical applications under SDL.
ok here is the probe for Rosa R9 lxqt

Okay, this time I have installed, updated, and GLX Gears was available, under Rosa 8 KDE with lxqt installed.
average fps is almost 800fps, and sdlmame works great. The only problem the desktop overload easy. 3 opened firefox is safe, but more it can "panic" the system, or lag even the cursor, and this doen't seem to be that easy under Rosa 9.
I have other computers, so I do prefer to have better OpenGL under this one.
This is the probe for Rosa 8 KDE with lxqt installed:

Here is the result of the bench under Rosa 9. It was Rosa 9 KDE with lxqt.
Frameskip is slightly slower, but in sdlmame, speed was cut by 40%.
And just in the case of, the hw-probe for this latest one, Rosa 9 KDE with lxqt.
In hope to have helped.
