Description of problem:
Install of this RMP winff video converter has broken graphics when loading ROSA desktop

I installed ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/Mandriva/official/2011/x86_64/media/contrib/release/winff-1.3.1-1mdv2011.0.x86_64.rpm

from

http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=winff

Now when I load ROSA it loads as far as the desktop, but the screen is black. I have 4 Kernels installed ranging from 4.1 up to 4.8 which I was using.

I have re-booted and this time is loaded and showed the desktop for around 2 seconds then the screen has gone black again

1.
Installing the packages from the old Mandriva in ROSA is usually a *bad* idea.
Especially, when we have a newer version in our official repositories, winff 1.5.3.

2.
As for all problems with graphics, it is impossible to do anything without system information.

You say, the virtual console (opened by ctrl-alt-f2) works, so open it when the problem happens and run hw-probe from there (as root) to upload the data to us:

hw-probe -all -upload -id daz-winff-desktop

Make sure the machine is connected to the network before doing that. hw-probe will output an URL, please post it here.

3.
You may also try to boot the system in a kind of a "safe mode": add "nomodeset xdriver=vesa" kernel options at boot time. The system will try to boot with a lower screen resolution and without 3d acceleration, which may help you save the data, etc.

To boot in that mode, select the item in the boot loader like you always do, press 'e'. Find the long line like "linux /boot/vmlinuz-<...> quiet resume=<...>". Write "nomodeset xdriver=vesa" (without quotes) in that line after "quiet".

Press F10 to continue booting.

I am not 100% sure on this. Does the attached show I am in the right place ?

I could not attach file to large I put it here:

Almost there. The line you need to edit is slightly below, you can press "down" key a few times to get to it.

The line starts with "linux /boot/vmlinuz-", you will not miss it.
