Description Rolf Pedersen 2013-11-14 23:04:57 MSK
$ rpm -q memtest86+ grub2
memtest86+-4.20-3-rosa2012.1.x86_64
grub2-2.00-30-rosa2012.1.x86_64

Whenever I run update-grub2 or grub2-mkconfig, I see this:

Cannot find grub config file, exiting.

Which seems to come from /etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+ which is not owned by any package but grub2 owns grub.d :

#!/bin/sh
set -e

if [ -f /usr/lib/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib ]; then
  . /usr/lib/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib
  LX=linux16
elif [ -f /usr/lib/grub/update-grub_lib ]; then
  . /usr/lib/grub/update-grub_lib
  LX=linux
else
  # no grub file, so we notify and exit gracefully
  echo "Cannot find grub config file, exiting." >&2
  exit 0
fi
...

$ urpmf grub-mkconfig_lib
grub2:/usr/share/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib

# cp -a /usr/share/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib /usr/lib/grub/
# update-grub2
...
Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest.bin
...

No more, "Cannot find grub config file, exiting." Looks promising and must be a better way. ;)
Thanks.
Comment 1 Denis Silakov 2014-05-20 12:03:22 MSD
Where fdid you get this /etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+ file? I guess from some other distribution?

All ROSA scripts in /etc/grub2 correctly include update-grub_lib:

. /usr/share/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib

So I would say that it is 20_memtest86+ file that should be modified.

Since this file is not present in our packages, I would incline to close the bug as "not a bug", but maybe it makes sense to add 20_memtest86+ to our memtest? What do other people think?
Comment 2 Alexander Burmashev 2014-05-20 12:15:17 MSD
I believe we never had memtest entry in grub2.
Imho, if we need it - the bug should be filled as a feature request.

FAQ from this rpm

[rolf@2012 ~]$ rpm -q memtest86+
memtest86+-4.20-4-rosa2014.1.x86_64
[rolf@2012 ~]$ rpm -ql memtest86+
/boot/memtest.bin
/usr/share/doc/memtest86+
/usr/share/doc/memtest86+/FAQ
[rolf@2012 ~]$ urpmq --sources memtest86+
http://mirror.rosalab.ru/rosa/rosa2014.1/repository/x86_64/media/main/release/memtest86+-4.20-4-rosa2014.1.x86_64.rpm

Attached is the only documentation provided in this rpm for this program and I don't see any way to use it, except download some other file or maybe the user is left to contrive some workaround.

Maybe someone can explain how this binary is to be used? Why not just remove the package from the distro, from main, no less, since no-one seems to be willing to lift a finger to add the few elements I've documented?

You would call this a "feature request"? It is now considered a "feature" that the fucking thing do more than take up space in the mirrors and on the hard drive of those foolish enough to install it?

grub.d file to create memtest boot menu entry

  I don't know where it came from.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/126160/how-can-i-add-the-memtest86-options-back-to-the-grub-menu

On that page is a file that differs only in the name of the memtest binary:

[root@2012 grub.d]# diff -h 20_memtest86+ /download/rosa/2012.1/20_memtest86+-ubuntu
23,24c23,24
< if test -e /boot/memtest.bin ; then
<   MEMTESTPATH=$( make_system_path_relative_to_its_root "/boot/memtest.bin" )
---
> if test -e /boot/memtest86+.bin ; then
>   MEMTESTPATH=$( make_system_path_relative_to_its_root
>   "/boot/memtest86+.bin" )

Also, as I said at the very beginning, grub-mkconfig_lib needs to be on a different path, which I did by copying. I imagine 20_memtest86+ could be modified to the existing path but that's not my call.
Comment 5 Denis Silakov 2014-10-16 12:02:45 MSD
How to use memtest in ROSA? Launch from any installation/live media, in the boot menu select "Troubleshooting" and then select memtest.

You have copied 20_memtest86+ for Ubuntu, so it's not a surprise that it doesn't work in ROSA>

.. maybe not from Ubuntu, but ROSA packages don't provide such file at all. I really wonder where did you get that 20_memtest86+ and why do you prefer to modify system file layout instead of modifying 20_memtest86+ itself?
Comment 7 Rolf Pedersen 2014-10-16 16:25:25 MSD
"why do you prefer to modify system file layout instead of modifying 20_memtest86+ itself?"

Didn't you read that I said, at the very beginning, "Looks promising and must be a better way. ;)
Thanks."

It's not my job to modify system files nor add scripts so a package will work. I told you all I know about how to get this package to be usable by researching at google. It's your job to make it work when installed from MAIN or take it the fuck out. Why should I have to create a separate medium to run memtest? I can get some small, bootable image that includes memtest Why shouldn't it work in an installation, as it does for many, many people. As many, many people have requested, where it doesn't work. As can be seen if anyone searches on 'grub2 menu entry for memtest86+" or similar. As how many other instances of the grub.d file can be found in merely the rpm-based distros at rpbone, for instance? [1]

Can't you understand I'm trying to point out a problem and a general area to fix it that seems to me not so fucking difficult and all that I can get from TPG or Rosa is argument, criticism, and fighting back about your egos? Is bugzilla just someplace to suck developer dick?

"it's not a surprise that it doesn't work in ROSA>" IT DOESN'T FUCKING WORK IN ROSA AT ALL WITHOUT SUCH A MODIFICATION. THE RPM IS USELESS IN AN INSTALLATION WITHOUT ONE SIMPLE MODIFICATION THAT MANY OTHER DISTROS HAVE THE SENSE TO PROVIDE. I HAVE IT WORKING, BY MAKING SOME AWKWARD WORKAROUND. GOOD LUCK TO YOU WITH YOUR POLICY OF REDUCING BUGS BY RELENTLESSLY DISCOURAGING BUG REPORTING!
