You are starting kaffeine from console under the root account, it is not guaranteed to work. Meanwhile, how do you switch to root in console? If you use 'su', make sure that you add a '-' after it:

$ su -

Actually if kaffeine works under the usual user, then I would close this bug.

And indeed, the only way to reproduce this bug is to switch to root in terminal using 'su' (not 'su -') and try to launch kaffeine.

If you want to launch applications with GUI from root, then use 'su -'.
